Chemical Reactions

We are learning about chemical reactions. We know that chemical reactions happen when things mix together to create something new.

We put vinegar in a bottle and half filled a balloon with baking soda and put it on top of the bottle. A chemical reaction happened!

Lots of children predicted that the balloon would explode!

Our Equipment: A balloon, a funnel, measuring cups, a small bottle, 1 cup of vinegar and some baking soda.

Pouring 1 cup of vinegar into the small bottle.

Kaedyn gently stretching the balloon.

Putting the balloon onto the funnel.

Carefully pouring baking soda into the balloon until it was half full.

Georgia lifting the balloon so the baking soda tips into the bottle.

A chemical reaction happened.

The baking soda and vinegar created a chemical reaction. The acid (vinegar) mixed with the alkaline (baking soda) and created a gas (carbon dioxide). The gas moved up the bottle to make the balloon blow up.

Jack wondered what would happen if we added food colouring to the vinegar before we put the balloon with baking soda onto the bottle.

Adding food colouring did not stop the chemical reaction. We observed the only change was the bubbles and liquid were green.

Room 6 Scientists wrote about the experiment:

Room 6 are learning about science. We collected vinegar, a funnel, balloons, food colouring and newspaper. We poured the food colouring into the bottle of vinegar and put the balloon on the funnel and put baking soda in the funnel to drop in the balloon. We carefully took the balloon off and put it on the bottle of vinegar. We stretched the balloon out first. In the bottle it was really really really really bubbly! The bubbles were white. The food colouring was the colour green. We were all excited. Finally, all the air exploded in the balloon and blew the balloon up.

All of Room 6 have been learning to be Scientists. We did an experiment. First, we poured 1 cup of vinegar into a coke bottle. Second, we got a funnel then we stretched the balloon. We put the balloon onto the funnel. Slowly, we poured the baking soda in the funnel until the balloon was 1/2 full. I predicted that the balloon will pop. I observed that the balloon got bigger and bigger. What happened? Georgia tipped the balloon upside down and put the baking soda into the vinegar bottle then some baking soda got to the top then the balloon blew up!

The other day we did an experiment. First, we poured vinegar in the empty coke bottle. Next, we poured baking soda in the funnel and into the balloon. Then we poured the food colouring in the coke bottle. After that, we put a balloon on the bottle. The balloon will fill up with air and go fat! Get some newspaper but if you don't have newspaper do it outside. My hypothesis was: I predicted that it will explode onto the newspaper! I saw the vinegar mix with the food colouring that was green then the balloon filled up with air and nearly popped!
