Bubbling Popcorn!

We are exploring Carbon Dioxide or CO2. We wondered what chemical reaction would happen if we mixed water, popping corn, baking soda and vinegar into a bottle.

We found out when we mixed just the water and popping corn that the popping corn sinks to the bottom of the bottle and stays there.

We observed that when we added baking soda and vinegar a chemical reaction happened.

Water + base (baking soda) + acid (vinegar) = CO2 (Carbon Dioxide gas was made = bubbles) and the popcorn bobbed up and down. AMAZING!

When we looked really closely we could see that bubbles had formed around each of the popping corn seeds.

We added 4 heaped teaspoons of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar

We added 1 more cup of vinegar to see what would happen = more bubbles

The popping corn seeds floated up to the top. The CO2 (carbon dioxide gas) made some of the popping corn seeds go up, down, up, down.
